PWSL Time Standard

In the results, you may notice a reference to a PWA or PWB time. The Prince William Swim League has developed standards to help gauge your swimmer's development in comparison to other swimmers in the league. An "A" time is one that falls in the range that would be achieved by the fastest 20% of swimmers. A "B" time is in the range that has been achieved by the next fastest 40%, and a "C" time by the remaining 40%.

If your swimmer notices a plus or minus sign next to the letter code, a plus sign indicates that your swimmer has advanced from a "C" time to a "B." A "B-" indicates that the swimmer has previously recorded an "A" time. Each event has its own time standards, reflecting the difficulty of the stroke, the age of the swimmer, and whether the event is for boys or girls.

Piedmont Claims Second Place Overall in PWSL Blue Division

On Saturday, the Piedmont Tsunamis fell short in their quest to repeat as PWSL Blue Division champions, losing to the Sudley Seahorses while holding off the Braemar Blasters in a tightly contested battle. The second-place league finish for the Tsunamis caps the team’s longest streak of wins as a contender in the top county bracket at thirteen, as they placed 284 points behind the Seahorses, and 336.5 points ahead of the Blasters by a score of 4139.5(S) v 3855.5(P) v 3519(B).

The morning was marked with fierce competition as the opening relays drew to a close. Piedmont commanded four wins out of the initial eleven contests, but were not able to mark high enough in the outstanding events to take an early lead. As the individual events began competition, only 26 points separated the three teams. The Piedmont swimmers were able to place top marks in 40% of the Free and IM races, which kept the meet in check and reach early on. However, the gap would widen by the end of head-to-head swims. Final relays were almost perfectly evenly matched to close out the event, giving no team a singular advantage outside of the preliminary results.

That said, there were plenty of remarkable Blue Ribbon Tsunami performances on the day. Piedmont swimmers delivering top times in the Divisional matchup were: Declan Bengtson, Sophia Malinowski, Sedonah Traister, Charlotte Hannam, Camille Spink, Eric Liao, Brooks Schires, Gannon Maxwell, Alyssa Sagle, Maddie Richardson, Jonathan DeVito, Emma Hannam, and Luke DeVore. Additionally, four Piedmont swimmers finished with first place marks in the all-county Cyber Meet for divisional’s weekend. These included (multiple Blue Ribbons in parenthesis): Sedonah Traister (2), Camille Spink (3), Alyssa Sagle, and Emma Hannam.

Standout Swim: The Boys 9-10 50 Backstroke event seeded the top three swimmers a mere .8 seconds apart, with Tsunami Gannon Maxwell staring northward at his two Sudley counterparts. That would not hold as the race played out. Maxwell blasted past expectations and rivals to bring home first place, lowering his time by a whopping 2.16 seconds, and scoring a new personal best of 41.78.

On the relay record front, the Piedmont 15-18 Boys were on fire to launch the meet, delivering league records in both of their combined events. Opening the match, the Boys 15-18 200 Free Relay group of Sebbie Borden, Eric Liao, Luke DeVore and Henry Radzikowski claimed PWSL all-time honors with a new best of 1:38.25. One short half hour later, the same squad would be at it again. This time, bettering the county bar by a solid .75 seconds in the 200M Medley with an improvement to 1:48.44.

Also on the Medley Relay record front, the 13-14 Girls squad of Camille Spink, Emma Hannam, McKenna Curry and Hayley Hubert erased their Piedmont time from just two weeks ago by almost one and a half seconds, coming in at 2:10.64.

Three relay record holders from the combined events would also bring league and team top times in individual performances. The first of these came from Camille Spink, this time for a PWSL top outcome in the 100M IM at a new best of 1:04.37. Spink would later cap her individual swims by delivering her third Tsunami team record at the event, marking a 28.94 in the 50 Fly. Next, Eric Lao for the 15-18 Boys brought repeated honors in the 100M IM, setting the new Tsunami goal at 59.68. Later, Emma Hannam would strike definitively in the Girls 13-14 50 Breast, cracking the 35 second barrier for Piedmont to achieve a new team best of 34.88.

Behind the outstanding leadership of Head Coach Jay Thorpe and his staff, the Piedmont Tsunamis leave the 2019 summer campaign with an undefeated regular season record, second place league-wide accolades, and a solid foundation of enthusiasm and results. We will see the Tsunami wave surge once again, next June, as the team continues their campaign towards another championship position for PWSL swim. The Tsunami family sincerely thanks our hosts for the championship event, the Sudley Seahorses, as well as divisional rival Braemar Blasters for a morning of healthy swim and competition. Finally, our sincerest of appreciation reaches out to all of our PWSL swim competitors, families, coaches, officials, sponsors, and meet support members for another exceptional summer of swim.

    Tsunamis Cap Undefeated Regular Season

The most scorching temperatures of the summer would not be daunting enough to squash the enthusiasm and determination of the Piedmont Tsunami swim team on Saturday, as the club methodically delivered another unblemished regular season record through the defeat of the Kingsbrooke Sea Lions. Swimming in front of a home crowd, while braving heat indexes as high as 106 degrees, the 2959.5 v 2331.5 victory keeps Piedmont perfect atop the PWSL Blue Division, and extends their win streak from the beginning of last season to 12-0.

Piedmont’s victory in the penultimate contest of the year could best be described as “balanced” on the day, as the team maintained a solid lead through each stage of the meet. The Tsunamis opened by landing 8 of 11 early relay wins, before marching forward with 63% of first place awards in individual swims. Finally, Piedmont capped the morning efforts by going 7 for 8 in the combined freestyle events, assuring their success. Ultimately, five of the Tsunami relay teams would claim top marks in the week for the county.

The oppressive temperatures would be enough to stifle individual and team Tsunami record attempts (although Kingsbrooke did break two of their team records), however several Piedmont swimmers would markedly improve on personal best times while delivering top-finishing marks at the meet. Blue ribbon honors for Piedmont were taken by (PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis)Sophia Malinowski, Christian Mulroe, Sedonah Traister (1), Charlotte Hannam, Alex Crown, Emma Hannam (1), Henry Radzikowski (1), Alex Diatchenko, Matthew Pianoto, Madelyn Jenkins, Alyssa Sagle, Christopher DeVito, Davin Phe, Jonathan DeVito, Eric Liao (1), and Sebbie Borden.

The Piedmont win was symbolically important as well, heralding an emotional “Last Splash” at home for several of the team’s graduating seniors. Swimmers, coaches and leaders moving on include: Sebbie Borden, Lindsay Brandt, Luke DeVore, Hayden Goertz, Tyler Michael, Brice Nelson, Rhys Seaman, Mia Tremblay, and Torii Waisanen. The graduating senior class capped each of their final performances with crowd appreciation and applause for their team contributions as they soon transition to Tsunami alumni status.

Piedmont will look to benefit from their season-long momentum next Saturday, as they defend the PWSL championship crown in the Blue Division finals against the Sudley Seahorses and the Braemar Blasters. Taking Tent City on the road to the Sudley hosted event, the Tsunamis will attempt a repeat of top league honors in what promises to be another tightly challenged contest of leading swim clubs in the region.

Piedmont Defeats Sudley, Improves to 5-0.

On Saturday, the two top-ranked teams in PWSL put each of their undefeated records on the line in a battle for sole leadership of the Blue Division standings. In what was to be the closest match in the history of the competition between the two clubs, the Piedmont Tsunamis were able to keep their perfect season alive in front of a home crowd as they defeated the Sudley Seahorses by a score of 2648.5 v 2643.5. The five point differential replaces the tightest previous margin between the teams which occurred only two years ago, when Piedmont was on the receiving side of a seven point defeat in regular season play. The Tsunami victory extends their win streak to 11 meets in total, dating back to last year’s unbeaten season.

The suspenseful contest was balanced throughout the day, starting with early morning relays that had the Tsunami squad at a mere 15 point advantage entering into the individual swims. That surplus was diminished after the freestyle exchanges – necessitating a Piedmont rally of more than 40 points during the later events to retake the lead. The Tsunamis entered the final races with only a narrow five point cushion, and would require an even split (or better) on relay swims to retain the win. The Free Relays were a give-and-take throughout, when the game winning save was arguably delivered by the Boys 13-14 group. In thrilling fashion, the efforts of Alex Crown, Justin Lee, Alex Huang and Davin Phe combined to break their seed time and deliver a .24 second upset that maintained the final relay balance, and assured the team success.

The morning was highlighted for Piedmont with their greatest record-breaking performance tally of the season, delivering a total of nine new “best swims”. Notably, Camille Spink contributed to Tsunami records in all five of her combined and individual events on the day. On the personal front, Spink beat her own PWSL League record in the Girls 13-14 50M Free with a new time of 26.34. She also set the new team bar in the 50M Fly at 28.95, and in the 100M IM at 1:05.46. Girls 13-14 teammate Emma Hannam also delivered a new record in the 50M Breast, besting her own time from last year by .42 seconds to come in at 35.18. From the Tsunami boys, Christian Mulroe took down the 9-10 25M Fly by almost a quarter of a second to clock an impressive 16.76. Finally, Eric Liao brought the Boys 15-18 50M Back score to under 28 seconds for the first time ever, coming in at a remarkable 27.94 for the event.

Three more records were fetched in the combined events, two of them coming from the same squad of 13-14 Girls. Opening the day, Spink, Hannam, McKenna Curry and Hayley Hubert accomplished a new best team time of 2:12.06 – an improvement of 1.15 seconds and good for top weekly accolades in the league. Later, the same grouping would scorch the 200 Free Relay mark to establish a new Piedmont best of 1:57.08, a paring of almost two seconds versus prior efforts. Also from the Tsunami girls, the 9-10 combination of Sedonah Traister, Sammi King, Kaylee Dominguez and Alyssa Sagle continue to impress by striking for the second time in three weeks in the 100M Free Relay – this time coming in at a noteworthy 1:04.87 overall and also placing league top marks.

Piedmont first place performances for individual swimmers were numerous on the day, and Tsunami relay times combined for seven top county times as well. Personal Blue Ribbon swims and top overall league times (in parenthesis below) were brought in by: Declan Bengtson, Sammi King, Charlotte Hannam, Davin Phe, Camille Spink (3), Jessica Lee, Sedonah Traister (1), Eric Liao (1), Katherine Diatchenko (1), Brooks Schires, Sophia Malinowski, Alyssa Sagle (1), Maddie Richardson, Alex Crown, Boris Coleman (1), and Emma Hannam (1).

The victory finds Piedmont entering week six as the only undefeated team in PWSL. On Saturday, the 5-0 Tsunamis will take their win streak and Tent City back on the road – this time facing the Kingsbrooke Sea Lions on the march towards their final Blue Division showdown, coming only two short weeks away.

Tsunamis Deliver High Tide At Ashland

In a battle between two undefeated teams, the Piedmont Tsunamis were able to keep their perfect drive intact on Saturday by beating the Ashland Stingrays with a score of 2832 v 2432. On the road for the second straight week, the win brings Piedmont to 4-0 overall for the summer. Tsunami swimmers battled hard to bring in their tenth consecutive victory – a streak that dates back to last year’s undefeated season, and continues their longest win tally as a member of the PWSL Blue Division.

Piedmont charged out of the gates in early action, taking eight of the opening eleven relays for their own – with five of those relays commanding the fastest times in the league as a whole. Individual swims were much improved week-over-week for the Tsunamis, as they brought in 42% of their races at personal bests over seed times. In total, the Piedmont athletes would garner 67% of all first place marks on their way to the combined events. As the free relays concluded, the Tsunamis closed upon six of eight final swims and added another three league high performances to their team accomplishments for the day.

Strong relay work fueled the bulk of the Tsunami momentum on their journey to the 400 point win. Piedmont swimmers participating in relays that delivered a season high of eight top PWSL times for the week included: Boris Coleman (2), Johnathan DeVito (2), Sophia Malinowski, Declan Bengtson (2), Alyssa Sagle (2), Sedonah Traister (2), Kaylee Dominguez (2), Abigail Hubert (2), Camille Spink (2), Emma Hannam (2), McKenna Curry (2), Hayley Hubert (2), Sebastian Borden (2), Eric Liao (2), Luke DeVore (2), Henry Radzikowski (2), and Brooks Schires.

Relay of the Day: The most exciting of the team matches were found in the Girls 8&U 50 Free race. Here, the efforts of Audrey Seidl, Ella Michel, Madelyn Jenkins and Sophia Malinowski overcame their tight-margined second place seed time and pulled off a thrilling victory at the touch – edging out their Ashland counterparts by .79 seconds for an improved mark of 1:27.06.

On the individual swim front, two team records would fall for the Piedmont Tsunamis. Camille Spink dropped a quarter second off her own PWSL league mark from two weeks prior, to set the new bar at 26.62 for the Girls 13-14 Free event. A few races later, in the Girls 13-14 IM, Spink would break her own club record again – shaving her new time down to 1:06.09.

Blue ribbon efforts and top overall league times (in parenthesis below) were plentiful for Piedmont, and included: Declan Bengtson, Sophia Malinowski (1), Alyssa Sagle (1), Alex Diatchenko, Charlotte Hannam, Davin Phe, Camille Spink (3), Sebbie Borden (1), Katherine Diatchenko, Sedonah Traister, Alex Crown, Jonathan DeVito, Christopher DeVito, Katherine Crown, Alex Huang, Emma Hannam (1), Brooks Schires, and Christian Mulroe.

Only two undefeated teams remain standing in the league – and, after next week, there will be only one. On Saturday, the Piedmont Tsunamis bring the Tent City caravan back home to host their division rivals, the Sudley Seahorses, in what is certain to be a tightly contested match between undefeated clubs. Both squads will be fighting for their fifth wins, and important momentum, as the back stretch of the summer ignites on the way to the Blue Division PWSL championships.

Tsunamis Bring the Heat, Improve to 3-0

Heat waves met Tsunami waves on Saturday as Piedmont improved to 3-0 on the season, beating the Braemar Blasters by a score of 2844 v 2436. Taking to the road in a fierce Blue Division contest, Piedmont’s 400+ point victory extended their current streak from last season to nine consecutive wins – the squad’s longest rally since becoming a member of PWSL’s top division.

In the first meet of the year to break 90 degree early-morning temperatures, both teams were challenged to produce top times. While the Blasters ultimately yielded 20% more swimmers with faster results versus seed, the “on paper” statistic would not translate significantly to point differential. Here, the advantage turned out to be Tsunami consistency – with the vast majority of Piedmont swimmers delivering results that were, if not faster than prior, within microseconds of previous expectations.

It was this stability that resulted in a steady pacing of point accumulation for the Tsunamis during individual events, after an almost evenly distributed relay start to open the match. On head to head battles, the Piedmont team methodically carved out 63% of the Top 10 times, highlighted by dominance from the 15-18 Boys (84% of Top 10 marks) and the 9-10 Girls (76% of Top 10 marks). The final free relays broadened the gap slightly for Piedmont, and cushioned the divisional victory.

All-time record marks were safely tucked away for the morning, as the first heat wave of summer smothered the opportunity for Tsunami club records, and also stilled all league records across PWSL. That said, several Piedmont first place athletes converted top overall league times (in parenthesis below). Blue ribbon Tsunamis against Braemar included: Declan Bengston, Sophia Malinowski, Christian Mulroe, Sammi King, Camille Spink (3), Sebbie Borden, Gannon Maxwell, Sedonah Traister (2), Charlotte Hannam (1), Emma Hannam, Katherine Diatchenko, Audrey Seidl, Alex Diatchenko, Maddie Richardson, Jonathan DeVito, Eric Liao, Brooks Schires, Alyssa Sagle, and Patrick Hooper Jr. All in, these victories accounted for 63% of individual event top marks. Moreover, for the third week in a row, four of the Tsunami relay efforts ranked as the league’s best comparatively.

Tsunami Nation will get no break in the schedule next Saturday as they travel once more to face the Ashland Stingrays. In a battle of two undefeated squads from the top two divisions, Piedmont will look to keep their seasonal record unblemished and win streak alive against a strong Ashland club – all before a return home on July 13th to face Blue Division rival Sudley.

Tsunamis Strike at Home, Improve to 2-0

Only a distance of a little more than 100 pool lengths separate the Piedmont and Dominion Valley swim clubs, however it has been several years since the two teams have squared off in head-to-head PWSL action. That was rectified Saturday, with the Piedmont Tsunamis defeating the Dominion Valley Sharks in the “Battle for James Madison Highway” by a score of 2,884.5 v 2,388.5.

The Tsunamis performed solidly through early relay and individual contests during their home opener, and extended their undefeated streak from last season to a total of nine straight wins. Although the Sharks were able to rally back for the free relay events at the end of the day, the Tsunamis were able to hold those final matches to an even draw – maintaining their cumulative point total on the morning and bringing the club to a 2-0 start for the season.

Both Piedmont and Dominion Valley were almost perfectly paired by way of swimmers, entries, splashes, and qualifying swims. And while no team in the county was able to crest more than 50% faster starts, both squads yielded athletes that delivered 40% better swims than in prior weeks. This ranked in the upper range for the league by way of individual performance.

The Tsunami 15-18 year olds and IM relay teams established a foundational lead in early action, combining for eight of eleven team swim victories. As individual competition completed, the Piedmont squad would ultimately command 73% of first place honors.

Blue ribbon Piedmont swimmers included (with PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Declan Bengtson, Sophia Malinowski, Sedonah Traister (1), Maddie Richardson, Davin Phe, Camille Spink (3), Henry Radzikowski, Charlotte Hannam (1), Luke DeVore (1), Gannon Maxwell, Alyssa Sagle (1), Justin Lee, Sebbie Borden, Jessica Lee, Jonathan DeVito, Ethan Lee, Emma Hannam (1), Eric Liao (1), Amber Parsons, and Christian Mulroe. Additionally, four of the Tsunami relay squads ranked as the league’s best comparatively.

One relay of particular note made their stamp of distinction in the Piedmont record books as well. Last week, against Victory Lakes, the Girls 9-10 100M Free Relay combination of Sedonah Traister, Sammi King, Kaylee Dominguez and Alyssa Sagle were a mere half second away from taking down the all-time club mark for the event. Racing with this goal clearly in mind, the squad would not be denied in Week Two – celebrating immediately as they smashed the 2015 team record by 1.2 seconds to come in at 1:04.99.

On the individual front, Camille Spink matched her accomplishment from last week by once again delivering the only PWSL record performance. This time, Spink took down her own posting from the 2018 divisional championships as she set a new league mark of 26.87 in the Girls 13-14 50M Free – an improvement of almost a half second. Eight events later, Spink would go on to shave similar time from her Piedmont record, set just one week ago, in the Girls 13-14 100M IM and created a new bar of 1:06.20.

Next Saturday, Tent City travels once more as Piedmont faces their Blue Division rivals, the Braemar Blasters. Much is on the line in the contest, as the Tsunamis look to keep both an undefeated season and a nine-meet win streak alive against a Braemar club seeking to even up overall standings against a tough divisional challenger.

    Tsunamis Surge in Season Opener

Cool temperatures and clear skies inaugurated the 2019 season for the returning PWSL Blue Division Champion Piedmont Tsunamis on Saturday, as the team delivered an impressive road win against the Victory Lakes Piranhas. The final tally of 3029.5 v 2203.5 extended the Piedmont undefeated streak from last season to eight consecutive wins.

Weather conditions were unquestionably a restrictive factor on the morning, with swimmers challenged to improve on times. On a day where only one team in the league delivered more than 50% faster starts, Tsunami depth and consistency would prove to be the deciding advantage in the victory.

The Piedmont relays controlled the leaderboard early by delivering opening wins in nine of the eleven combined events. As the competition unfolded, reliability from top seeded swimmers would become a major factor in the Tsunami’s success as individual swimmers tallied an impressive 68% of top five finishes. The most dominant for the club proved to be the 15-18 Boys, who remarkably placed in 24 of 25 of the Top Five slots through individual swims for the morning.

The Tsunamis saw a total of three team records and one league record fall during the contest – and all to the same swimmer. Camille Spink edged out her own 50 Fly top mark from last season’s Divisional Championships to set a new team record at 29.53. Earlier in the morning, Spink also landed a 1:06.62 in the 100 IM, recasting a seven year old team mark previously set by Piedmont alum Reni Moshos in 2012. Finally, in the 50 Back, Spink logged the only PWSL league record for the day – delivering a time of 29.84 and improving narrowly on the bar set by Aris Runnels in 2018.

All first-place Tsunami swimmers included (with PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Declan Bengtson, Sophia Malinowski, Alyssa Sagle (1), Sophie Hayden, Alex Crown, Emma Hannam (1), Henry Radzikowski, Jessica Lee, Sedonah Traister, Charlotte Hannam, Davin Phe, Camille Spink (3), Luke DeVore (1), Jonathan Herrera, Gannon Maxwell, Maddie Richardson, Justin Lee, Eric Liao, Blake Hayden, and Amber Parsons. In total, these efforts combined to give Piedmont swimmers first-place marks in 75% of all individual events. Additionally, four of the Tsunami relay squads ranked as the league’s best comparatively.

Next Saturday, Piedmont will be facing local rival Dominion Valley in the “Battle for James Madison Highway”. The Sharks, coming off a leadoff win, will be challenging the Tsunami squad who looks to keep their current win streak alive as Tent City returns for the 2019 home opener.

Piedmont Perfect to Capture Blue Division Championship

Closing out a summer swim season that was already packed with superlatives, the Piedmont Tsunamis finalized their quest on Saturday for top PWSL honors – finishing for the first time ever as Blue Division Champions, while also delivering an unblemished 7-0 record for the year. In a contest that would witness fierce speed and competition from all participants, Piedmont methodically cultivated an early lead throughout each stage of the divisional rivalry to claim the league championship with a total of 4097 points, followed by the runner-up Sudley Seahorses at 3835 points, and third place Braemar Blasters with a 3587 score.

The win was a historic one. The Tsunamis formally organized as a team in 2004, and have only participated in the Blue Division with consistency since 2014. Piedmont now becomes one of only three teams to collect the highest award for the Prince William Swim League.

The day began positively for all three squads with an opening ceremonial swim that celebrated two young athletes who have recently been challenged by difficult health issues. Piedmont Tsunami Dylan Brown and Sudley Seahorse Michael Munsell lined up together and inaugurated the meet with a 50 Free sprint that provided an inspirational message of perspective, sportsmanship, and overcoming adversity for all participants.

To earn the divisional title, Piedmont swimmers would be forced to outperform all prior efforts on the year by wide margins. Throughout the region, pool speeds were extremely fast with personal best times dramatically increasing to an average of more than 49% on the morning. Division rivals Sudley and Braemar would each outpace that benchmark to north of 60% speed improvements – driving the breadth of the Piedmont team to individually respond in kind if they were to close out the win. Here, the Tsunamis did not disappoint, having returned an astonishing (and league-leading) 69% faster grade versus prior times.

That speed translated to another pinnacle of achievement for Piedmont, as individual and team best-times dropped at a scorching rate – with an unprecedented 24 total records surrendering to improved results. Long standing Tsunami scores first recorded by such notable alumni as Nick Tremols, Reni Moshos and Sophia Revilak fell by the poolside in an absolute assault on the top club positions. New Piedmont record holders for relay and individual events on the day included (with multiple records in parenthesis): Maddie Richardson, Katherine Crown, Alyssa Sagle, Elaine Hong, Emma Hannam (3), Kendall Rosenburg (2), Kara Wann, Camille Spink (5), Jana Gottschalk, Jessica Lee (2), Katherine Diatchenko (2), Morgan Furlong (2), Anna Dzouenko (2), Christian Mulroe (2), Christopher DeVito (3), Parker Treadwell, Patrick Hooper (2), Joseph Coleman (2), Theo Drescher (2), Matthew Pianoto (4), Jack Poleto (4), Davin Phe, Ryan Strotheide, Henry Radzikowski (3), Sebbie Borden (3), Luke DeVore (2), Eric Liao, and Tyler Michael.

The Tsunamis crashed into new overall league record territory twice on Saturday as well. Early in the day, the Boys 13-14 200 Medley Relay team of Ryan Strotheide, Jack Poleto, Matthew Pianoto and Theo Drescher posted the first sub-2:00 score for PWSL with a new standard of 1:59.14. A few events later, the Girls 13-14 Freestyle swim would see both Camille Spink and Jamie Cornwell (SUD) compete to finish under the league mark, with Spink setting the new bar for PWSL at 27.31, or .5 seconds off the prior best from 2014. Spink ultimately broke Tsunami team records in all five individual and relay events she participated in throughout the morning.

In combined team swims, Piedmont rallied to a lion’s share of 8 of 17 total relay wins. As the head-to-head contests unfolded, personal results would translate to yet another unique Piedmont accomplishment. Here, the Tsunamis captured a league-leading mark of 133 total Top Times in the PWSL Cyber Meet standings. Additionally, Christian Mulroe landed first place league accolades in all three of his Boys 8 & Under events (Free, Back and Fly). Blue ribbon winners for the team included (PWSL top times noted by number in parenthesis): Christian Mulroe (3), Abby Hubert, Elaine Hong, Camille Spink (1), Anna Dzouenko, Maddie Richardson, Luke DeVore, Katherine Diatchenko, Joseph Coleman, Blake Hayden, Christopher DeVito (1), Charlotte Hannam, Matthew Pianoto (1), Eric Liao, and Alyssa Sagle.

The meet concluded with an anticipatory poolside dunking of Head Coach Jay Thorpe by an excited Tsunami home team who, along with returning Assistant Head Coach Nina Tremols and Assistant Coach Evan Brandt, celebrated on deck into mid-afternoon at the Piedmont Pool as they anticipated an official confirmation of the final score and tally. The Piedmont Tsunamis leave the 2018 summer campaign with renewed momentum, enthusiasm and excitement having successfully navigated their way to the coveted position of Blue Division Champions. We will next see the Tsunami wave rise in June 2019, as they look to defend their new title. The Tsunami family sincerely thanks our fellow Blue Division members Braemar and Sudley, along with the incredible support from our families, coaches, officials, sponsors, board members, and meet volunteers for another outstanding, and unparalleled, summer of swim.

Tsunamis Surge To Undefeated Regular Season

The Piedmont Tsunamis closed out their regular season on-the-road Saturday, defeating the Ridgewood Barracudas by a score of 2824 v. 2460. The contest capped a full summer of excitement for the Tsunami youth, as the victory marked an unprecedented accomplishment for the club their first undefeated regular season as a PWSL Blue Division member.

The day was not without its external challenges for both squads. Daunting storms threatened the morning swims at several stages in the meet – with significant downpours blasting the competitors as they pushed through final butterfly and relay events. Lower than normal temperatures also seemed to have an impact on both clubs, with each of the teams marking only 27% faster times versus previous week’s accomplishments.

Weather aside, the Tsunami squad would have to rely on stout individual performances once again throughout the day, having narrowly escaped the morning relays with only a slight lead. And while personal bests were at a premium, the Piedmont swimmers were still able to come close enough to prior marks to maintain the meet lead throughout, while notching several top times for the league as a whole. The most notable of these were found with Boy’s 8&U rising star Christian Mulroe – who took leading PWSL scores in each of the three individual events he competed in on the morning (back, breast & fly).

First place honors for Piedmont were had in 60% of all head-to-head events, and were taken by (PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Christopher DeVito (1), Maddie Richardson, Charlotte Hannam, Camille Spink (1), Henry Radzikowski, Anna Dzouenko, Alex Huang, Eric Liao, Katherine Diatchenko, Christian Mulroe (3), Joseph Coleman, Alex Diatchenko, Theo Drescher, Sebbie Borden, Emma Hannam (1), Amber Parsons, Alyssa Sagle, Ryan Strotheide, and Luke DeVore.

The only record for the morning was once again felled by Christopher DeVito for the 9-10 Boys. This week, DeVito shaved a hair off his 50 Breast mark set only seven days ago in a home meet against the BWaves. Ultimately, DeVito was able to better the time by another .01 seconds, setting the new bar at 43.06.

Bragging rights for the top of PWSL will dramatically culminate at the Piedmont home pool next Saturday, where the undefeated Tsunami team will clash once again with divisional rivals Braemar and Sudley, in what will statistically be one of the most closely matched final competition in Blue Division history.

    Piedmont Stays Undefeated

On Saturday, the Piedmont Tsunamis claimed a home pool victory to remain the only undefeated team in PWSL by upending the Bridlewood Bridlewaves in a competitive swim day. The win marks the end of a three-meet gauntlet of victories for the Tsunamis, having successfully faced both their Blue Division rivals, along with the only other undefeated club in the BWaves. While the final regular season home swim was tightly contested at various stages of the morning, Piedmont finished with a 184 point margin of victory in a 2735 v. 2551 outcome.

Piedmont came strong out of the gates, clearing both 15-18 Freestyle relays and taking 7 out of 11 opening team matches in total (four of which were top times in the county). Here, the only Tsunami team relay record on the day went down to the 9-10 Boys in the Medley event. The combined efforts of Mark Edwards, Christopher DeVito, Joseph Coleman and Patrick Hooper, Jr. resulted in trimming a June record mark by .21 seconds, clocking in at a new low of 1:13.19.

The Tsunamis methodically delivered throughout individual events, having been closely challenged to low double-digit spreads at various points of the morning. Ultimately, the Piedmont club would pace at a season-high of 40% faster times versus personal bests on the year, while reigning in 56% of all top-finishing marks. Blue ribbon honors for Piedmont were taken by (PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Christian Mulroe (2), Theo Drescher, Henry Radzikowski (1), Christopher DeVito (1), Charlotte Hannam, Matthew Pianoto (1), Camille Spink (2), Katherine Diatchenko, Mikaylee Jenkins, Blake Hayden (1), Adelina Chehadeh, Maddie Richardson, Alex Huang, Emma Hannam (1), Preston Borden, and Morgan Furlong,

Weather and road-travel aside, the Tsunami squad would have to rely on stout individual performancesWhile the BWaves came back aggressively in freestyle relays to take all but the final team matchup, total squad depth in head-to-head contests were the deciding factor for the entire meet. Here, the Tsunamis secured 54% of all top 10 finishes – ultimately providing a stable cushion of points to claim victory on the day.

The Tsunami win was symbolically important as well, heralding the last splash at home for several of the team’s graduating seniors. Swimmers, coaches and leaders moving on include: Willem Drescher, Evan Hackler, Jeremy Kochan, Noah McMurrer, Parker Spink, Piero Untiveros, Julian Williams, Morgan Furlong, Olivia Morrow, Alex Segura, and Meghan Walters. The largest graduating senior class in Piedmont history capped each of their final performances with crowd appreciation and applause for their team contributions as they soon transition to Tsunami “alumni status.

In meets commanding significantly faster overall swims for most of the league, no PWSL records were to fall on Saturday. That said, Piedmont had several team bests surrender to rising swimmers. The star of the day was Christopher DeVito who tallied two team-leading performances for the 9-10 Boys (along with contributing to the relay record). DeVito made his mark early, toppling a four year old best in the 100 IM by almost 1.3 seconds to 1:23.15. DeVito had more in the tank on later swims as well, shaving almost a half second off his record mark from earlier this year in the Boys 9-10 Breast setting the new bar at 43.07. Additionally, the oldest standing time in the 9-10 Boys age group fell dramatically to Joseph D. Coleman. Here, in the 9-10 Fly, Coleman rewrote the books on a seven year old accomplishment originally set by now-rising senior Luke DeVore coming in with the first sub-17” score ever for the group at 16.95 seconds.

Next Saturday, the Piedmont Tsunamis travel south, taking “Tent City” on the road for the last time this season as they face the Ridgewood Barracudas. Here, Piedmont strives to close out their first “perfect” regular season in Blue Division history before they host the final divisional matchups later in the month.

Saturday marked a weekend of firsts for the Piedmont Tsunami swim club. Their first regular season sweep of the Blue Division was complimented by their first 4-0 start to a year since moving up to the top ranked grouping of PWSL swim teams. All of this was built on the result of Saturday's away-meet matchup, in which the Piedmont Tsunamis defeated their divisional rival, the Sudley Seahorses, for the first time in club history – by a score of 2683 v 2610. The victory keeps the Tsunami’s record unblemished in their 2018 campaign towards the Blue Division championship. “That was fun,” said Piedmont Head Coach Jay Thorpe while the final score was tallied. Assistant Head Coach Nina Tremols and Assistant Coach Evan Brandt were also on deck as the results were verified, confirming the Tsunami victory and first place honors for regular-season divisional meets. With a combined experience of over 22 years leading the team, the history and significance of being only the second PWSL club to defeat the Sudley Seahorses since 1990 was not lost on the coaching staff.

Cooler weather and away conditions challenged much of the Piedmont team to outperform their personal best scores, as only a third of the swimmers were able to improve on their seasonal times. Additionally, the Tsunamis had to fend off a net loss of five closely called races that moved their predicted first place finishers into second place results. But outstanding depth and consistency would ultimately rule the day for Piedmont – with the swimmers winning 56% of all head-to-head matchups and never surrendering the lead throughout all three segments of the closely held contest.

Excitement started early with the Mixed 8 & Under Medley Relay group of Sophia Malinowski, Blake Hayden, Christian Mulroe and Abby Hubert who improved their seed time by over a second to come in at 1:26.97, upsetting the Seahorses for first place in an opening salvo. Piedmont relay squads were particularly remarkable on the day, gathering a season high total of five first place PWSL finishes overall.
Tsunamis Abby Hubert, Christian Mulroe, Sophia Malinowski and Blake Hayden after their upset victory in the Mixed 8 & Under Medley Relay.

As the individual events portion of the meet unfolded, first place finishes for the Tsunamis also topped eight of the best marks for the league as a whole. This, plus the methodical consistency of delivering top twelve placements, allowed the Piedmont squad to gather a 73 point lead as the meet entered the final free-relay events. A mark they would hold by splitting the team swim races evenly. Blue ribbon winners included (PWSL top times noted by number in parenthesis): Christian Mulroe (3), Abby Hubert, Elaine Hong, Charlotte Hannam, Anna Dzouenko, Christopher DeVito (1), Maddie Richardson, Matthew Pianoto (1), Luke DeVore (1), Katherine Diatchenko, Blake Hayden, Alex Crown, Jack Poleto, Camille Spink (1), Katherine Crown (1), Emma Hannam, Eric Liao, and Alyssa Sagle.

In record-breaking news around individual performances, three Tsunami team marks fell on Saturday. Christian Mulroe continues to hammer away at his own previous accomplishments, taking over a second and a half of collective time from two separate records. First, Mulroe delivered a 16.68 (-.56) in the Boys 8 & Under 25 Free, beating his prior score from the 2017 divisional swim. Later in the day, Mulroe struck again with a 17.51 (-.99) in the Boys 8 & Under 25 Fly as he bested his result from the second meet in the 2018 season. The only other record to surrender was at the hands of Jack Poleto in the Boys 13-14 50 Fly. Here, Poleto was able to shave .02 seconds off a three year old time to bring the new standard to 29.41.

    Tsunamis Improve to 3-0

The Piedmont Tsunamis kept their undefeated season alive on Saturday morning by beating their Blue Division rivals, the Braemar Blasters. While blazing hot conditions throughout the region challenged swimmers from both teams to improve on their personal best times, the Tsunamis responded with determination and consistency to advance to 3-0 on the year with a 2741 v 2548 win.

The Tsunamis flooded the morning relay events with better-than-expected combined efforts, racking up top honors in 8 of 11 opening matches. Here, the only Piedmont team record of the day fell during the Boys 9-10 100 Meter Medley. Led by Mark Edwards, Christopher DeVito, Parker Treadwell and Joseph Coleman, the 1:13.4 time bettered the previous record mark by over a half second, set earlier in the 2018 season.

With a foundational lead established, the Tsunamis methodically added to the score separation through individual swims. As a unit, the 15-18 Boys were almost unstoppable for Piedmont during the day as they captured a remarkable 76% of all top 10 spots from individual races. Blue ribbon finishes were also solid regardless of age group, with highest marks for the Tsunamis in over half of the total contests. First place honors for Piedmont were taken by (PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Christian Mulroe (1), Abby Hubert, Elaine Hong, Theo Drescher, Camille Spink (1), Henry Radzikowski, Anna Dzouenko, Maddie Richardson, Matthew Pianoto (1), Blake Hayden (1), Christopher DeVito (1), Charlotte Hannam, Emma Hannam (1), Eric Liao, Katherine Diatchenko, and Kenzie Rutledge.

The last leg of the meet was capped by dramatic final touches during relay events. The most notable of these gains featured a Tsunami upset victory by the Girls 8 and Under Freestyle crew. Swimmers Abby McMurrer, Adelina Chehadeh, Sophia Malinowski, and Abby Hubert outpaced their projected ranking to come in first overall, helping to seal the Piedmont victory during the closely-held finishing races.

Piedmont travels once again next Saturday to face another tough division rival, the Sudley Seahorses. Here, the two undefeated teams will battle for top marks on regular season wins, and Blue Division leadership, as the second half of the PWSL season begins.

    Tsunamis Stay Perfect at Home

The Piedmont Tsunamis enjoyed a rare back-to-back start to the PWSL swim season by hosting at home again on Saturday. Here, they improved their record to 2-0 by delivering an impressive win against the Kingsbrooke Sea Lions. At the end of the morning, the Piedmont squad had posted a league-leading number of total points in the 3077 v. 2205 victory – a score that disguised the fierce competitiveness of both teams during the meet.

The Tsunami coaching staff successfully experimented with multiple new lineups for their Medley/Freestyle team events, losing only three relay races on the day. On the individual event front, cooler temperatures and mostly rainy conditions challenged swimmers on both sides of the pool to match or beat their prior seed times. Fortunately for Piedmont, many members of the team were able to outperform their expected positional results, with several athletes successfully taking home their first blue ribbons for the year.

All first-place Tsunami swimmers included (with PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Blake Hayden, Abby Hubert, Christopher DeVito (1), Maddie Richardson, Alex Crown, Henry Radzikowski, Anna Dzouenko, Joseph Coleman, Alex Huang, Matthew Pianoto (1), Katherine Diatchenko, Christian Mulroe (3), Emery King, Mark Edwards, McKenna Curry, Matthew Tirrell, Camille Spink (1), Adelina Chehadeh, Katherine Crown, Charlotte Hannam, and Luke DeVore. In total, these efforts combined to give Piedmont swimmers first-place marks in 76% of all individual events.

The only Tsunami record to shatter on Saturday was through an outstanding effort by Christian Mulroe in the Boys 8 and Under 25 Meter Butterfly. Mulroe took .19 seconds off a 2016 team mark and clocked a time of 18.50 in the event. Additionally, huge congratulations also go to the Boys 15-18 group of Sebbie Borden, Eric Liao, Luke DeVore and Henry Radzikowski who were the only Piedmont foursome to come in first overall in PWSL relay times – being the fastest squadron county-wide in both the 200 Meter Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay races.

Next Saturday, the Piedmont Tsunamis take “Tent City” on the road for the first time this summer as they challenge to stay perfect both overall, and divisionally, against the Braemar Blasters – a team looking to bounce back after a closely fought upset at the hands of Bridlewood this past weekend.

    Tsunamis Storm Through Home Opener

Saturday marked the beginning of PWSL action with a home meet for the Piedmont Tsunamis, where the team capped a strong day of swim by delivering an opening victory over the Ashland Stingrays. At a final tally of 2855.5 v 2406.5, the Tsunami squad brought a healthy balance of both relay and individual performances that ultimately secured the home turf win, enabling the club to launch into the season with a 1-0 record.

The Tsunamis went to work quickly, outpacing the seed rankings by winning 7 out of the initial 11 relay events. This included an impressive 100 Medley Relay record-setting performance by the Tsunami 9-10 Boys group of Parker Treadwell, Christopher DeVito, Joseph Coleman and Patrick Hooper, Jr. Their time of 1:14.09 displaced a four year old mark for the team and set the tone for the individual performances to come. Here, in head-to-head swims, the Tsunamis used top tier strength and bench depth to control the meet - ultimately taking first place honors in over 60% of individual races.

The individual swim accomplishments by the Tsunamis proved to be impressive across PWSL as well, as Piedmont led the charts in 6 of the top PWSL times on the day. Christian Mulroe (2), Camille Spink (2), Matthew Pianoto, and Katherine Diatchenko all shared number one overall placements in the league for individual performances.

In single swim record-breaking news, six individual bests for the Tsunami club fell on Saturday – representing over 25 years of combined time “on the books” before being dismantled. Camille Spink opened the run by turning in a 28.01 in the 50 Free – a mark strong enough to be PWSL’s leading time for all girls (regardless of age group), and breaking the long-standing Tsunami record set by Sofia Revilak back in 2011. Spink followed up later by taking .68 seconds off another of Revilak’s 2011 marks in the Girls 13-14 50 Fly, for a new record time of 30.38. Also for the Piedmont girls, Emma Hannam turned in a stellar opening performance in the 13-14 Breast to down a seven year club record, producing a 35.64 result that was previously capped by Tsunami veteran Reni Moshos. In fact, breast event top times were under considerable fire by the Piedmont squad on the day, starting with Christopher DeVito – who broke his own Boys 9-10 record from just under a year ago and clocked a new time of 43.53. In similar fashion, Matthew Pianoto downed his own 2017 13-14 Boys Breast record to come in at 33.42. For Pianoto, this was a “doubling down” from his earlier accomplishment on the morning, where he toppled the 2016 Boys 13-14 IM result for a new time of 1:04.84.

Next Saturday, “Tent City” stays put as the Tsunamis enjoy a rare back-to-back home meet matchup, looking to build momentum on the start of the season as they challenge the Kingsbrooke Sea Lions.

    Piedmont Rises In Blue Division

The Piedmont Tsunamis finished the summer swim season with impact on Saturday, delivering their best result ever as a PWSL Blue Division contender. The final tally positioned the Tsunamis squarely in second place for the day, and the season – coming in a mere 75.5 points behind the rival Sudley Seahorses, and an impressive 243.5 points ahead of the Braemar Blasters (3972.50 v 3897 v 3653.50).

The morning was marked with fierce, back-and-forth competition in what was, by all counts, a polar opposite of the blazing hot swim conditions seen in the prior week’s matchup. Threatening thunderstorms and double-digital average temperature drops combined for surprisingly effective pool conditions at the Sudley-hosted event – with all three squads shattering several team, and league records.

The Tsunamis were competitive throughout the contest, gaining and yielding the lead several times against Sudley as the meet marched deep into individual races. But, ultimately, the late breast and fly events, coupled with the team freestyle relays, would be the final deciding factor as the matchup drew to a close.

Big wins dramatically kept the margin tight, and came from several Piedmont swimmers throughout the competition. Blue ribbon Tsunami performances were had by Christian Mulroe, Alyssa Sagle, Charlotte Hannam, Preston Borden, Nikia Campbell, Alex Diatchenko, Katherin Diatchenko, Camille Spink, Jack Poleto, Christopher DeVito, Emma Hannam, and Matthew Pianoto.

The Tsunamis also closed the year with a season-high frenzy around team records for a meet – conquering 11 of their all-time best marks. On the relay record front, the Girls 13-14 200 Medley squad of Jessica Lee, Amber Parsons, Katherine Diatchenko, and Natalie Fahey took down a six year old best time, and shaved almost two full seconds from prior, coming in at 2:16.67. The 15-18, 200 Free Relay Girls of Nikia Campbell, Morgan Furlong, Torii Waisanen and Anna Dzouenko claimed the blue ribbon, and a new 1:54.24 Tsunami record as well. Shortly after, Furlong, Campbell and Dzouenko were joined by Becca Mayo to take down the 200 Medley Relay at 2:10.37. On the boy’s side of the combined swims, the fastest collective race of the day was found in the 15-18 Freestyle Relay competition – where all three squads broke team records (with a league record suffering as well). Here, the Piedmont band of Henry Radzikowski, Evan Brandt, Tyler Michael and Sebbie Borden took the bar down from their mark of just two weeks prior, to come in at 1:42.68. Additionally, the best effort of the Boys 13-14, 200 Medley fell to Emmett Hannam, Matthew Pianoto, Jack Poleto and Preston Borden as they notched a 2:02.57 swim to take first in the race overall. In mixed swim events, the Tsunami 8 & Under up-and-comers of Alyssa Sagle, Gannon Maxwell, Brielle Appiatse and Christian Mulroe broke the record time from the divisionals that took place exactly one year ago by fielding a 1:23.37 mark – a full second to the better.

On the individual record front, Camille Spink cracked her own Girls 11-12, 50 Free mark set earlier in July by delivering a 28.23 time. Spink followed an hour later by snagging her third PWSL League Record of the season at 32.74 in the 50 Back. Also for the Tsunami girls, Charlotte Hannam toppled her prior team-best time in the 10 & Under 100 IM with an impressive 1:23.97. For the Boys, Christian Mulroe improved upon the 8 & Under, 25 Free standard with a 17.24 – a mark that edged the two-year-old previous performance by .01 seconds. Finally, Matthew Pianoto grabbed his second record on the day by bettering the 13-14 Breast to 33.77, a slot he previously held with an effort from two weeks ago.

Behind the amazing leadership of Head Coach Jay Thorpe, Assistant Head Coach Nina Tremols and their staff, the Piedmont Tsunamis leave the 2017 summer campaign with renewed momentum, enthusiasm and excitement as they climb by one positional ranking to finish second overall in the league for the first time. We will see the Tsunami wave rise once again, next June, as they hope to continue their methodical march towards the top position in PWSL swim. The Tsunami family sincerely thanks our PWSL swim competitors, families, coaches, officials, sponsors, and meet support members for another outstanding summer of swim.

Piedmont Wins on the Road Against Lake Ridge

The Piedmont Tsunamis improved to 5-1 on Saturday by closing out the regular season of swim competition with a solid road victory against the Lake Ridge Lancers. The 1,017 point win was the largest margin of success for the Tsunamis this year, culminating in a 3,148 v 2,131 final tally that also yielded the second highest cumulative point mark in the league for the week.

The Lancers graciously hosted the Tsunami squad in Woodbridge, where both clubs were challenged not only by individual competition, but by the summer heat. Coming off four days of scorching high temperatures, the pounding sun tasked both teams – each event becoming progressively more difficult to exact “personal best” performances from the water. In fact, a majority of the PWSL clubs in the league, including the Piedmont squad, suffered their lowest meet marks this season by way of percentage of times faster than previous attempts. Conditions aside, both the Tsunamis and Lancers put up a stout competition with some extraordinary highlights to note.

The 15-18 relays and team medley events started strong for the Lancers as they turned three of the seeded races to their advantage off the blocks. But even with these unexpected swings, Piedmont took seven of the first 11 team swims to enter the individual matchups with a marked lead.

Many Piedmont swimmers notched some of their first individual blue-ribbon performances for the year on Saturday. All first-place Tsunami swimmers included (with PWSL top overall times also noted by number in parenthesis): Christian Mulroe, Alyssa Sagle, Alex Diatchenko (1), Charlotte Hannam (1), Emma Hannam, Jack Poleto (1), Jessica Lee, Anna Dzouenko, Gabby Maxwell, Camille Spink (3), Katherine Diatchenko, Henry Radzikowski, Mark Edwards, Sedonah Traister, Emmett Hannam, Becca Mayo, Gannon Maxwell, Christopher DeVito, Alex Huang, Alyssa Kendrick, Torii Waisanen, and Gleb Babahov. The Tsunamis closed the meet decisively by sweeping all of the team free relay events to complete the win.

Personal bests were at a premium on the morning, and record marks even more so. The sole Tsunami team record to fall for the day belonged to Camille Spink in the Girls 11-12 Individual Medley. Spink, swimming the event for the first time this season, notched a team best 1:12.46 – improving by over two seconds the mark set last year by Katherine Diatchenko in the divisional finals.

Most importantly, the Tsunamis finished with their best in-season record as a Blue Division contender – emphatically concluding the year only seven points from an undefeated ledger. A score the Tsunami squad looks to settle as they come in hot to the Blue Divisional Matchups next week at Sudley. Regardless of the outcome, swimmers, parents and fans should be excited about the July 29th event where bragging rights for the top flight in PWSL may be measured by mere seconds.

Piedmont Defeats Bridlewood to Move to 4-1

On Saturday, the Piedmont Tsunamis hosted the Bridlewood Bridlewaves swim team and delivered a solidly executed victory to move to 4-1 on the swim season. Coming off an aggressively fought seven point loss in the prior week, the Tsunamis used their final home swim of the year to bounce-back defiantly with a 253 point margin of victory.

While the Tsunamis never trailed by event through individual matchups, the Bridlewaves shot strong out of the gates in the medley relays – swinging key swims from the Tsunamis vs. seed time placements through two team-record performances. But in head-to-head swims the Tsunamis used their depth to recover, stacking a mounting lead during the morning and ultimately commanding 58% of all top placements.

The Tsunami victory was symbolically important as well, heralding the last splash at home for several of the team’s graduating seniors. Swimmers, coaches and leaders moving on include: Evan Brandt, Gabby Botsetter, Nikia Campbell, Vicki Fahey, Andrew George, Kaylee Kirby, and Becca Mayo. The crowd capped each of their final performances with appreciation for their contributions, and applause towards their accomplishments as they soon transition to Tsunami “alumni status.

A team record performance opened the day for Piedmont with the Boys 15-18 Free Relay squad of Evan Brandt, Luke DeVore, Henry Radzikowski and Sebbie Borden improving upon their own mark from two weeks prior with a 1:43.02 swim. As individual events progressed, Tsunami swimmers led the charts in 12 of the top PWSL times on the day. Charlotte Hannam (3), Camille Spink (3), Matthew Pianoto (2), Alyssa Sagle, Christopher DeVito, Emma Hannam, and Christian Mulroe, all shared number one overall spots in the league for individual performances.

In single swim record-breaking news, only one PWSL league time fell on Saturday – and that was to a Tsunami swimmer. Camille Spink notched a new league best in the 11-12 Girls’ Butterfly for the second week in a row with a time of 30.55. As for the Piedmont team record marks, the star of the day was Charlotte Hannam with three leading performances for the 9-10 Girls. Hannam improved on her record in the 100 IM, to 1:24.07, and the 50 Free, to 32.58. For an encore, Hannam kept family traditions alive by bringing in a new low mark of 42.91 in the 50 Breast – a bar previously set by her sister, Emma, in 2015. Coincidentally, the home pool proved favorable to the event as a whole with a flurry of team breast stroke records. Christopher DeVito beat the 9-10 Boys Breast record for the fourth time this season by dropping to 44.08, almost a half second improvement. Finally, Matthew Pianoto took down his own mark from June to earn the top team spot in the Boys 13-14 Breast at a time of 34.01.

Next Saturday, the Tsunamis will take "tent city" on the road for the first time in nearly a month, looking to build momentum as they challenge the Lake Ridge Lancers in Woodbridge to close the regular season.

Coming off their impressive divisional victory against Braemar last weekend, the Piedmont Tsunamis faced a difficult back-to-back challenge in taking on their second PWSL Blue Division Rival, the Sudley Seahorses, in a meet that would ultimately be decided by a mere seven points. The final tally – Piedmont 2641.5, Sudley 2648.5 – was the closest head-to-head margin ever between the two teams, and was truly anyone’s swim to take through the final relay events of the day.

The contest for top divisional ranking was a back and forth struggle throughout the day. Sudley led the early third of the meet by outperforming their positional rankings in two of the opening medley relays. However, their cushion eroded as Piedmont clawed back to retake the lead through a steady march of head-to-head victories – winning 67% of all individual battles and moving swimmers aggressively up the rankings vs. seed time placements. Even with that in hand, the Seahorses were ultimately able to duplicate their initial combined efforts later in the morning, with freestyle relay wins that sealed the narrow outcome.

The Piedmont team contribution was solid for the total meet as swimmers delivered a 43% faster swim time ratio vs. prior performance. Individually, Piedmont Tsunamis owned a remarkable 11 of the top PWSL times on the day. Charlotte Hannam, Camille Spink (3), Matthew Pianoto, Katherine Diatchenko, Anna Dzouenko, Alyssa Sagle, Evan Brandt, Emma Hannam, and Christian Mulroe, all recorded number one overall spots in PWSL for individual performances on Saturday.

However some of the biggest news in the league came by way of toppled records at the meet. Only three PWSL LeaguePiedmont swimmers Camille Spink and Emma Hannam combined to take down three PWSL League Records on Saturday

Records were broken in total on Saturday – and all three came from two of the 12 year old swimmers on the Tsunami squad. In an 11-12 Girls Freestyle event that saw both Piedmont and Sudley team records crushed by sub-29 second performances, Camille Spink took more than a second and a half off her seed time to notch a new league-best at 28.31 seconds. Spink then delivered another PWSL league record later that morning by recording a 30.57 time in the 50 Fly, shaving .33 seconds off 2016’s time. In the 11-12 Girls 50 Breast, Emma Hannam closed the door on the PWSL record that she tied last week, beating last year’s mark by almost a half second at 36.22 – definitively owning the top slot.

For the Tsunamis, seven team records fell Saturday with the 9 and 10 year olds looking to make a new squad statement towards the future. Christopher DeVito gave more cushion to the Boys 9-10 50 Breast record that he broke last week by beating it again at 44.40. In the Girls 9-10 50 Freestyle event, Charlotte Hannam set the new bar at 33.21 – taking a full second off her best time of the year.

Piedmont 9-10 Girls 50 Free Record Holder Charlotte Hannam took a full second off her time for a new team record of 33.21

Camille Spink broke the Girls 11-12 team back record for the fourth straight week in a row, with a time of 33 seconds flat. Finally, Spink joined Emma Hannam, Erin Walters and Alyssa Kendrick in a repeat team record-breaking performance from prior week on the Girls 11-12 100 Free Relay, finishing the day at 57.40 seconds combined.

The loss brings the Tsunami squad to 3-1 overall on the year, and makes Piedmont evenly square at 1-1 on their divisional record. That said, the close contest on Saturday sets anticipation for what will likely be one of the most competitive Blue Division finals in recent history at the end of the summer swim season. In the meantime, the Tsunamis will swim their third straight event at home against the Bridlewood Waves on Saturday, July 15.

    Braemar Wins Blue Division

The end of an era and 15 league records fall during the Divisional meets. For the first time in well over a decade a team other than the Sudley Seahorses will sit on top of the PWSL standings. The Braemar Blasters finished their perfect season with a solid victory in the Blue Divisional meet. In other Divisional winners included Bridlewood (Black), Kingsbrooke (Red), Montclair (Orange), Ashland (White), Dale City (Green), Southbridge (Purple), and Westridge (Yellow). Southbridge had the closest margin of victory of just 54.5 point over Lake Manassas. However the Yellow division had all three teams within just 77.5 points of each other.
